The teams - South Korea

Asian qualifier - Group A

Football for the blind was introduced to South Korea in 1999, and the national team first participated in World Championship in Spain in 2000.

Through the participation in this competition, they began to accumulate the basic techniques and experiences for blind football, and since 2002, national competitions have been held to promote the sport in the country. Moreover, based on skills and strategies gained through these competitions, Korea was chosen to host the Asian Championship in 2007.

The Korean team has also competed in other World Championships, including those in Argentina and Brazil. Furthermore, the national team qualified for 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games and participated in it as the only ball game from the nation. In the 2009 Asian Championships in Japan, they won the third place and achieved qualification to participate at Blind 2010, which is a great excitement to them all.

Being blind himself, and thus understanding the characteristics of the disability, Ok Hyung Lee manifests outstanding leadership as team coach, and several team members, including captain Yong Kyun Oh, boast plenty of experience from their many years of in the game. The Korean team has also had some gifted strikers join the team recently and expect to fully reveal their capabilities as a team in Hereford.

A great day for the beautiful game

There is much debate about who coined the phrase the ‘beautiful game’ but everyone who has ever used it – from Pele to Platini – meant pretty much the same thing. Football is a game played by 300 million people across the globe, and enjoyed by millions more. It’s beautiful because it unites people. The teams, communities, and countries too.
