South American and Paralympic Champions - Group B

Brazil are the reining Paralympic Champions following their narrow victory over China in Beijing in 2008.

Brazil also come into the tournament having avenged their defeat to Argentina in the last World Championship final four years ago with a 2–0 win over them to clinch the South American title last December. It was quite a turnaround for Brazil, after they had finished only fourth in the group and qualified for the semi-finals behind Paraguay, Argentina and Columbia.

In a tough group, re-runs of the last World Championship and Paralympic final await Brazil, as well as a match against the current European Champions France.

Along with Argentina, Brazil are the only other country to have participated in each of the World Championships and with both the FIFA World Cup and Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in Brazil in the next decade, the favourites for the event are constantly under the media spotlight at home.

Domestically in Brazil there are two official competitions – the regional championships and the Brazilian championships, with the later having both a first and second division.

Interestingly, the ball being used in this championship was manufactured in Brazil.

A great day for the beautiful game

There is much debate about who coined the phrase the ‘beautiful game’ but everyone who has ever used it – from Pele to Platini – meant pretty much the same thing. Football is a game played by 300 million people across the globe, and enjoyed by millions more. It’s beautiful because it unites people. The teams, communities, and countries too.
