The Culture of Sport
London Mayor Boris Johnson recently announced a ‘corridor of Olympic interest’ in the heart of London for the 2012 Games, choosing to close off large parts of the centre around Trafalgar Square for a massive celebration.
The London pedestrian strip will stretch from Nelson's column to Covent Garden and Leicester Square, festooned with Olympic flags and banners. The area will be home to cultural festivities, bands and artistic performances.
Whilst the Blind cultural offer won’t quite be as grand, the legacy team are busy planning some pretty impressive stuff.
One aspect that the legacy group are keen to promote is the celebration of disability sport and its link to culture in the widest possible way.
I spent some of last Thursday afternoon at the magnificent Courtyard, opposite Hereford United’s Edgar Street home.
The Courtyard is Herefordshire’s Centre for Arts and has a diverse range of programmes from film through to exhibitions, work classes and a host of live events. Their current programme includes the London Community Gospel Choir, Baka Beyond (a dance group) and Postman Pat (and his cat!).
The Courtyard are commissioning the opening ceremony and are going to run a special programme during August to celebrate the event.
Most importantly the links to culture and the arts are being formed months in advance of the event and the work the legacy group are doing with schools offers children across Hereford the chance to get involved whether they like football, sport or the arts. This work will continue post event leaving a truly lasting cultural legacy.
